A swordsman wanders around the desert recounting stories of love, lust, vengeance and betrayal in Wong Kar Wai’s remarkable ode to wuxia. There are some outstanding fight scenes but Wong is less concerned about plot than about bruised hearts, lovelorn memories and the anguish of regret. It’s a languid sense of yearning, not action, that powers this gorgeously sand-swept, lyrical swords-and-solitude drama.
