Sofia Alaoui’s quietly powerful feature debut, featuring a breakout central performance by Oumaïma Barid, takes aim at Morocco’s wealthy elite.
Itto has married upwards, but her background is something her mother-in-law won’t let her forget. With the increasing presence of a strange and unexplained phenomenon, Itto’s family have taken themselves off to a guarded retreat, leaving her alone at home. When she tries to join them, things don’t go as planned and as a storm approaches, Itto finds herself increasingly alone. Alaoui makes the most of a pandemic-era psyche to create a striking yet subtle critique of privilege.
