ROAD HOUSE. - Intro'd by Richard Ayoade | Book signing before the film

Richard Ayoade had so much fun bringin ROAD HOUSE to our screen last year, he's bringing it back and again be signing copies of Gordy LaSure's 'THE GRIP OF FILM too!

THE GRIP OF FILM will be available to purchase on the night.

------------------------------

''In Rowdy Herrington’s 1989 magnum opus about the secret world of security guards, the camera frames a pair of high heels pivoting out of a recently opened car door, before panning up to a HOT GIRL waking towards a club in a CLINGY DRESS. The title comes up, salmon pink: Road House. Straight off the bat we know this film has style.

I’m pumped as s**t that Prince Chuck himself will be showing my fave flick in his personal cinema. The only bummer is that it’s on ratty-ass 35mm instead of pristine digital. And if you see that pin dick Richard Ayoade there, kick him in what’s left of his tiny balls for me'' – Gordy LaSure

------------------------------

Gordy LaSure’s passionate about film.

He eats film, he drinks film, and sometimes he’ll even watch a film.

But most of all he loves talking to people about film: whether a comely student with low confidence and a father complex, a Studio ‘development’ exec who doesn’t trust his own judgement, or the countless people Gordy LaSure’s encountered in his capacity as the web moderator on an Excessive Sweating Discussion Forum. Gordy LaSure’s always talking about films and how they’d be a shit ton better if only people would pull their asses out of their ears and listen to Gordy LaSure.

The voyage of this book can be categorised as an attempt to understand How In Hell Film Works. Why are some films bad, and some films terrible? How come just a handful of films (Titanic, Porky’s, Dirty Harry) are any good at all? Gordy’ll tell you How and Why, and he’ll give you a slug of Wherefore on the side. And he doesn’t shoot from the hip; he shoots from the gut.

- Richard Ayoade presents : THE GRIP OF FILM by Gordy La Sure

------------------------------

'A work of shimmering, glimmering genius . . . A pity perhaps that Richard Ayoade should so shamelessly piggy-back on the talent of Gordy LaSure, just to get his nose in the trough, but I understand that his name will probably get the book a readership that the (criminally) unknown LaSure could not manage on his own. Such is the price of integrity in this cheap world.'

- Stephen Fry

A PERFECT WORLD - 35mm • presented by Misc. Films x Badlands Collective

After a botched prison escape, convict Butch Haynes (Kevin Costner) finds himself on the run with a seven-year-old hostage (T.J. Lowther), pursued by Clint Eastwood’s grizzled Texas Ranger and a young criminologist played by Laura Dern. This brooding thriller set on the eve of the Kennedy assassination is an intelligent, quietly devastating examination of damaged masculinity and the cyclical nature of violence.

The film turns on a fascinating, ambiguous performance by Costner – playing against his heroic star image to striking effect – as the bruised and magnetic Butch. On release, A Perfect World was something of a box office disappointment, but the passing years have burnished its reputation and this sole collaboration between Costner and Eastwood is now widely regarded as among both star and director’s finest work.

A Perfect World screens as part of Kevin Costner: King of America, a mini-season programmed by Misc. Films and The Badlands Collective. A 30th anniversary screening of Bull Durham screens at the Regent Street Cinema on the 21st August.

“Eastwood’s greatest hidden gem” – The Playlist

“Costner's performance is absolutely riveting, a marvel of guarded, watchful character revealed through sly understatement and precise details” – New York Times

THE BEFORE TRILOGY - Sunrise, Sunset & Midnight!

The cornerstone of director Richard Linklater’s career‑long exploration of cinematic time, this celebrated three-part romance captures a relationship as it begins, begins again, deepens, and strains over the course of almost two decades.

Chronicling the love of Celine (Julie Delpy) and Jesse (Ethan Hawke), from their first meeting as idealistic twentysomethings to the disillusionment they face together in middle age, The Before Trilogy also serves as a document of a boundary-pushing and extraordinarily intimate collaboration between director and actors, as Delpy and Hawke imbue their characters with a sense of lived-in experience, and age on-screen along with them.

Attuned to the sweeping grandeur of time’s passage as well as the evanescence of individual moments, the Before films chart the progress of romantic destiny as it navigates the vicissitudes of ordinary life.

FORMATS : Sunrise & Sunset = 35mm, Midnight = DCP.

FALLING DOWN - a Celluloid Sorceress 35mm presentation • 25th Anniversary

The Celluloid Sorceress’ retrospective of Joel Schumacher comes to The Prince Charles Cinema with the dark fable commonly hailed as the director’s greatest masterpiece.

Michael Douglas is D-FENS, a white collar, white male suburban defense worker trapped in gridlock on his way to work on the Los Angeles freeway.  Brought to breaking point by the accumulation of daily frustrations and antagonisms he snaps, abandoning his car and embarking on a mosaic journey “home”.  Encountering the full diversity of the ever expanding City of Angels, D-FENS also acquires an arsenal of weaponry as retiring police detective Robert Duvall follows the trail he leaves behind.

The Los Angeles riots of 1992 lasted nearly a week.  Warner Bros., like everyone else, pulled their productions filming in the city back within the confines of the studio lot.  FALLING DOWN finished its shoot at Burbank and was released in 1993 to very mixed reviews, controversy and protests.  To some it was a reactionary response to events from a liberal Hollywood set.  Others understood it as a gripping dark comedy meditating on socio-economic tensions and the balance of American privilege.

For those on the West Coast the film was a little too close to home and its prescience resonates in today’s political climate.  Schumacher, the writer of Sparkle, Car Wash, The Wiz and D.C. Cab challenges a mainstream audience to examine its unconscious biases through a bravura performance by Michael Douglas. With superb cinematography and an exciting sound design, FALLING DOWN is funny, thrilling, provocative and stands as one of the finest “Lost in L.A.” movies of all time.

Introduced by Rebecca Nicole Williams at 8:55pm with a selection of vintage 35mm trailers before the feature.

Each wants to make it big in his own way, but not everybody they meet is looking out for them, as they learn when a seemingly harmless outing goes awry.

WINGS OF DESIRE [Der Himmel über Berlin] - 35mm presentation

In WINGS OF DESIRE, director Wim Wenders' (Paris, Texas, Alice in the Cities) most metaphysical work, a guardian angel desires nothing more than to be human.

Every day, Dammiel (Bruno Ganz, The American Friend, Downfall) listens to the thoughts of mortals who play their lives out on the streets of West Berlin. He finds himself entranced by a trapeze artist (Solveig Dommartin, Until the End of the World) whose eloquent expression of her doubts and fears makes him yearn for a life where he can feel happiness and love.

Like Michael Powell's A Matter of Life and Death, the afterlife in WINGS OF DESIRE is a world in monochrome. Only the living can see in full colour and it is their lives, with their moments of sorrow and joy, that Wim Wenders captures so eloquently in this singularly original film that was co-written with Peter Handke (The Goalkeeper's Fear of the Penalty Kick, Wrong Move).

Winner of the Best Director prize at the 1987 Cannes Film Festival, WINGS OF DESIRE is both a paean to Germany's capital and a rumination on human existence, and remains one of the most vital films ever made.

EAGLE VS SHARK - 35mm presentation

AN AUTUMN AFTERNOON [Sanma no aji] - a 35mm presentation

Yasujiro Ozu’s elegiac final film, An Autumn Afternoon, charts the inevitable eclipse of older generations by irreverent youth. Revisiting the story of his earlier masterpiece Late Spring (1949), Ozu once again casts Chishu Ryu in the role of Hirayama, the concerned father to unmarried Michiko. Harangued on all sides to marry off Michiko, Hirayama reluctantly prepares to bid his old life farewell. A cast of tragi-comic characters weaves seamlessly through this gently satirical portrayal of lifes inevitable, endless cycle.

Ozu’s rarely seen post-war melodrama, A Hen in the Wind, is also included here. In a Japan recently devastated by World War II a devoted, near-destitute mother turns to prostitution to pay medical bills when her son falls dangerously ill.

LATE AUTUMN [Akibiyori] - a 35mm presentation

When college nostalgia inspires a group of middle-aged businessmen to match-make for the widow – played with measured dignity by Setsuko Hara (Tokyo Story) – of one of their friends and her daughter, they have no idea of the strife their careless interference will cause. Late Autumn’s examination of familial upheaval moves effortlessly from comedy to pathos and is amongst the finest of legendary director Yasujiro Ozu’s post-war films.

Included here is the surviving version of Ozu’s moving silent drama A Mother Should Be Loved. Missing both first and last reels the incomplete film nevertheless achieves a dramatic intensity in its portrayal of Sadao, a young man struggling to deal with a disturbing family secret.
