Alex Ross Perry surveys the emblematic 1990s US indie rock band in typically idiosyncratic style: part-documentary, part-biopic, part-stage musical – but all Pavement.
No true Pavement fan who admired the 90s band’s oblique-yet-catchy songs, offbeat style and ornery band-audience dynamics would expect a traditional documentary about them. Perry’s (Listen Up Philip, Her Smell) experimental film does not disappoint. Juggling fact, fiction (with scripted Joe Keery and Jason Schwartzman-led re-enactments) and musical theatre workshops, the multi-faceted metatextuality provokes genuine questions, revelations and delight. This is a love letter to fandom. Prepare to be slanted and enchanted.
