For the festive season, Funeral Parade is proud to present The Long Day Closes, Terence Davies’ bittersweet elegy to cinema-going and queer childhood.

Drawn from Davies’ own recollections of the mid-1950s, the film centres on Bud, a lonely boy growing up in working-class Liverpool. Bullied at school and largely friendless, he finds solace in trips to the local cinema and the faraway glamour of Hollywood. His loving family are also a source of comfort but, as he becomes aware of his burgeoning sexuality, Bud must ultimately confront his guilt, shame, and fear alone. Beautifully rendered from a child’s-eye-view, The Long Day Closes is a haunting and tender work of poetic cinema.
