On Sunday 8th November, we will be joined by Director Alex Cox for a Live Post-Film Q&A
For his directorial swan song, Alex Cox (Repo Man, Straight to Hell) stars in this frontier fable of American Greed, playing the mysterious drifter Strindler as he scours the West for the names of dead Mexican labourers.
In this loose adaptation of Nikolai Gogol's 1842 novel Dead Souls, Strindler - or is it Swindler? - raises eyebrows when he offers to pay a pretty penny to add to his list of names. Wandering affably from saloon to ranch, Strindler exercises the old adage that money talks - but sometimes too loudly. Between the town drunk, hot-headed cowherds and local outlaws, Strindler soon finds himself tangled up in his own tall tales.
Pistol duels and crooked officials abound, and Spaghetti Western legend Gianni Garko (If You Meet Sartana Pray For Your Death) claims a co-writer credit. But Cox's idiosyncrasy stands out as the film veers tonally through the picaresque, dark satire and other unexpected twists. Dead Souls is a meditative Western that takes place at the borderlands of the American nightmare: where fortunes rest on a dirty deal and legacies are built on blood and gold.

Following the finale of his TV series, filmmaker John Wilson looks to the bedrock of his beloved New York City for inspiration and structure. Concrete, the world's most widely used building material, appears as an ever-present life force, and John sets out to make the definitive documentary on the matter. To tell this seemingly drab story, he decides to use the industry-approved Hallmark formula to increase his movie's appeal. But his foundation soon begins to crumble – literally and figuratively – as he struggles to balance artistic freedom with the realities of the modern film industry.

Hacks breakout star Hannah Einbinder and, in a playful bit of meta-casting, Gillian Anderson (The X Files, Sex Education) headline this heady, gory slasher homage from writer-director Jane Schoenbrun. Like Schoenbrun’s previous films I Saw the TV Glow and We’re All Going to the World’s Fair, it uses a horror genre lens to explore a rich array of themes and ideas – queer identity and sexuality, memory and nostalgia, the nature of female desire, the state of the entertainment industry – with humour, vulnerability and affection.
After years of slapdash sequels, the Camp Miasma slasher franchise is handed over to an enthusiastic, cerebral young director (Einbinder) – who credits the first film with her own queer awakening – to resurrect. But fantasy and reality collide when she visits the original film’s star (Anderson), now a mysterious recluse living on its old set, and the two women fall into a blood-soaked world of fear, desire and delirium
