Funeral Parade is proud to present Sylvia Scarlett, George Cukor’s gender-bending screwball comedy starring the incomparable Katharine Hepburn.
After the death of her mother, young Sylvia Scarlett(Hepburn) leaves France with Henry (Edmund Gwenn), her ne'er-do-well father, who is trying to outrun his gambling debts. In order to avoid the suspicion that an older man and a younger women travelling together might invite, Sylvia disguises herself as a man, reinventing herself as Sylvester. Upon their arrival in England, Henry and Sylvester become partners-in-crime with Jimmy Monkley (Cary Grant), a “gentleman adventurer” and scoundrel. But what will happen when Sylvester begins falling for a dashing bohemian artist (Brian Aherne)? Though its’s playful and distinctly queer sexual politics made it “box office poison” in 1935, 90 years later this hidden gem is ripe for rediscovery as a milestone in on-screen gender nonconformity.
