Barry Lyndon
1975 185mins UK, USA (12A) Drama
Directed by Stanley Kubrick Starring Marisa Berenson, Patrick Magee, Ryan O'Neal

Stanley Kubrick bent the conventions of the historical drama to his own will in this dazzling vision of a pitiless aristocracy, adapted from a novel by William Makepeace Thackeray. In picaresque detail, Barry Lyndon chronicles the adventures of an incorrigible trickster (Ryan O’Neal) whose opportunism takes him from an Irish farm to the battlefields of the Seven Years’ War and the parlours of high society. For the most sumptuously crafted film of his career, Kubrick recreated the decadent surfaces and intricate social codes of the period, evoking the light and texture of eighteenth-century painting with the help of pioneering cinematographic techniques and lavish costume and production design, all of which earned Academy Awards. The result is a masterpiece—a sardonic, devastating portrait of a vanishing world whose opulence conceals the moral vacancy at its heart.

Barry Lyndon is presented in the film’s photographed aspect ratio of 1.66:1, as specified in a December 8, 1975, letter from director Stanley Kubrick to projectionists. This new 4K restoration was sourced from a 4K scan of the 35mm original camera negative. The high-definition transfer, created in 2000 under the supervision of Leon Vitali (Kubrick’s personal assistant), served as a colour reference for this restoration. The 5.1 surround audio mix was created from restored original soundtrack stems.

Dragon Inn
1967 111mins Taiwan (12) Drama
Directed by King Hu Starring Chien Tsao, Chun Shih, Lingfeng Shangguan, Ying Bai

A quintessential entryway into the highly stylized, tightly choreographed wuxia genre of martial arts cinema, Dragon Inn was a global breakthrough for the form’s greatest practitioner, King Hu. Its influence remains incalculable, from its annihilation of traditional expectations of what kind of role an actress should inhabit (also chipped away at by Hu’s previous masterpiece Come Drink with Me), to the formation of many of the genre’s archetypes – such as the Eunuch, the Swordswoman, and the Family of Murdered Loyal Officials – that are still recognizable in the martial arts films of today.

It’s the middle of the Ming Dynasty. The powerful eunuch Cao (Pai Ying) has killed the Loyal Minister Yu, and Yu’s children are exiled to the border, whereupon Cao undertakes efforts to massacre the remnants of the family. As Yu’s children take refuge in the Dragon Gate Inn, Xiao the righteous swordsman (Shih Jun) and the surviving loyalists of Minister Yu engage in a series of battles to the death against the forces of the blood thirsty eunuch.

When Salieri meets Mozart, the young man proceeds to insult him in a variety of ways. Envious of his junior’s talent, which throws his own mediocrity into sharp relief, Salieri does his best to curtail Mozart’s success, and plots to destroy him.

Presented from a beautiful 4K restoration in celebration of the film's 40th anniversary, courtesy of Curzon.

Are we being asked to consider whether these events heralded something that would explode years later with the rise of Nazi Germany? Did these events contain the germs of the tragedies that followed? Garth Marenghi presents "Race with the Devil" + "Brotherhood of Satan"
1971 180mins USA (15) Double Bills
Directed by Jack Starrett|Bernard McEveety Starring Peter Fonda, Warren Oates, Strother Martin, L.Q. Jones

Greetings, traveller. I’m Garth Marenghi, horror novelist, flick director and star of the silver scream (namely as Dr Rick Dagless in my groundbreaking televisionary masterpiece, Darkplace.)

Join me this October as I celebrate publication of the third novel in my bestselling TerrorTome trilogy, This Bursted Earth with an especially curated season (by yours truly) of horror films which have influenced (and in many cases stolen from) my own creative juices.

First up we have a Satanic double-bill of Race With the Devil and Brotherhood of Satan on October 1st, both of which bear an uncanny resemblance to my own Satanic tale in a similar vein, (available in the aforementioned and aforecoming This Bursted Earth.)

RACE WITH THE DEVIL (1975) : Roger (Peter Fonda), his friend Frank (Warren Oates), and their wives (Lara Parker, Loretta Swit) are heading from San Antonio to the wilderness of rural Texas for some off-road motocross. What they find instead is a Satanic cult sacrifice, and they are unfortunate enough to be caught observing the ritual. Naturally, this doesn't sit too well with the cult members. Now Roger and Frank are on the run from what is apparently a very sizable Texan Satanist community.

THE BROTHERHOOD OF SATAN (1971): Widower Ben (Charles Bateman) is taking his young daughter (Geri Reischi) and new girlfriend (Ahna Capri) to visit a relative when they find a grizzly car accident by the highway. They report the incident to the sheriff (L.Q. Jones) in nearby Hillsboro, N.M., and discover the town in the grips of a deadly fear. In the past 72 hours, 26 people have died, and 11 children have gone missing. As Ben investigates, a local priest (Charles Robinson) informs him that a Satan-worshipping cult is to blame.

Please Note: This Double Feature will feature a LIVE INTRO from Garth Marenghi. There will be a 20-25 minute break between features.

Garth Marenghi's 'This Bursted Earth' is coming 30th October. Click HERE to Pre-Order!

The Beast [La Bête]
1975 98mins France (18) Horror / Erotic
Directed by Walerian Borowczyk Starring Sirpa Lane, Lisbeth Hummel, Elisabeth Kaza, Marcel Dalio

Walerian Borowczyk's most notorious and controversial film wildly re-works the classic Beauty and the Beast story into a very adult fairy tale, a parody of pornographic tropes and an assault on notions of 'good taste'. Bestial dreams interrupt the venal plans of a French aristocrat attempting to save a crumbling mansion by marrying off his deformed son, Mathurin, to a horny American heiress, Lucy. Yet Mathurin seems more interested in his horses than in his bride-to-be, and when Lucy finds out about the story of his 18th-century ancestor Romilda (Sirpa Lane) copulating with the titular beast it sparks to life one of the most outrageous dream sequences in cinema history. A huge hit in France that was extensively censored and banned elsewhere, The Beast broke new ground in sexual explicitness and remains a truly startling experience even today.

THE TWILIGHT SAGA : NEW MOON : Bella Swan is on the cusp of her 18th birthday and blissfully happy with her undead beau Edward Cullen. While celebrating her birthday with Edward's family of `vegetarian' vampires, a frightening incident convinces Edward that he's simply too dangerous to be around his sweetheart. He decides to leave the town of Forks in order to ensure her safety - leaving her behind, angry and depressed.

THE TWILIGHT SAGA : ECLIPSE : Danger once again surrounds Bella (Kristen Stewart), as a string of mysterious killings terrorizes Seattle and a malicious vampire continues her infernal quest for revenge. Amid the tumult, Bella must choose between her love for Edward (Robert Pattinson) and her friendship with Jacob (Taylor Lautner), knowing that her decision may ignite the long-simmering feud between vampire and werewolf.

THE TWILIGHT SAGA : BREAKING DAWN - Part One : At last, Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Edward (Robert Pattinson) are getting married. When Jacob (Taylor Lautner) finds out that Bella wants to spend her honeymoon as a human, he is horrified -- for Edward's passion could accidentally kill her. Bella does indeed survive her honeymoon, but a new complication arises when she discovers that she's pregnant -- and the child is growing at an alarming rate. The pregnancy sets the wolves against Bella and Edward, but Jacob vows to protect his friend.

THE TWILIGHT SAGA : BREAKING DAWN - Part Two : Bella (Kristen Stewart) awakes -- as a vampire -- from her life-threatening labor, and her newborn daughter, Renesmee, proves to be very special indeed. While Bella adjusts to her new state of being, Renesmee experiences accelerated growth. Nosferatu
1922 94mins Germany (PG) Horror
Directed by F.W. Murnau Starring Alexander Granach, Gustav von Wangenheim, Max Schreck

This performance will feature a live score performed by Hugo Max.

"I first saw Murnau’s Symphony of Horror when I was nine years old. The film’s expressionistic images continue to haunt me, the chiaroscuro compositions tapping vividly into timeless subconscious fears.

My improvisations on viola and piano draw inspiration from the leitmotifs and sound effects of 70s horror soundtracks and the languages of Second Viennese School composers contemporary to Murnau, also Jewish Traditional Music that informs my personal approach to creating a score for the film." - Hugo Max

An iconic film of the German expressionist cinema, and one of the most famous of all silent movies, F. W. Murnau's Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror continues to haunt — and, indeed, terrify — modern audiences with the unshakable power of its images. By teasing a host of occult atmospherics out of dilapidated set-pieces and innocuous real-world locations alike, Murnau captured on celluloid the deeply-rooted elements of a waking nightmare, and launched the signature "Murnau-style" that would change cinema history forever.

In this first-ever screen adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula, a simple real-estate transaction leads an intrepid businessman deep into the superstitious heart of Transylvania. There he encounters the otherworldly Count Orlok — portrayed by the legendary Max Schreck, in a performance the very backstory of which has spawned its own mythology — who soon after embarks upon a cross-continental voyage to take up residence in a distant new land... and establish his ambiguous dominion. As to whether the count's campaign against the plague-wracked populace erupts from satanic decree, erotic compulsion, or the simple impulse of survival — that remains, perhaps, the greatest mystery of all in this film that's like a blackout...

Nostalgia [Nostalghia]
1983 125mins Italy, Soviet Union (15) Drama
Directed by Andrei Tarkovsky Starring Domiziana Giordano, Erland Josephson, Oleg Yankovskiy

Andrei Tarkovsky’s unforgettably haunting film, his first to be made outside Russia, explores the melancholy of the expatriate through the film’s protagonist, Gorchakov, a Russian poet researching in Italy.

Arriving at a Tuscan village spa with Eugenia, his beautiful Italian interpreter, Gorchakov is visited by memories of Russia and of his wife and children, and he encounters the local mystic who sets him a challenging task.

‘Nostalgia’ is filled with a series of mysterious and extraordinary images, all of which coalesce into a miraculous whole in the film’s final shot. As in all Tarkovsky’s films, nature, the elements of fire and water, music, painting and poetry all play a major role.

We then jump back in time to one of their last outings together before Anne becomes incapacitated as a result of an illness. What we witness is the cost of love – not the romance of cinema, but the day-to- day activity of caring for another person, no matter the physical or emotional cost.Michael Haneke's most sensitive film refuses to pull any punches in his depiction of the ageing process, but avoids sensation in favour of empathy. This is deeply humane, profoundly moving cinema.

Alexandre O. Philippe’s latest film essay is a conversation with cinema icon and mental health activist Kim Novak about Hollywood, ghosts and finding herself as an artist.

It’s in her painting studio that Novak, 92, welcomes Philippe (78/52, Lynch/Oz) for an intimate conversation. Generously illustrated with film clips, Hitchcock’s Vertigo unsurprisingly takes centre-stage, but it is also a film whose troubling themes cast a powerful shadow over her career. Novak is an excellent conversationalist and the film is a welcome portrait of one of Hollywood’s most enigmatic stars.

In his superlative hangout film, about a group of old friends who reunite to celebrate one of their own opening a gallery show in Copenhagen, Banton manages to make the formal format of the film feel fresh, and expertly handles subtle shifts in tone and dynamic. It’s a deftly performed drama, particularly by Tuwaine Barrett, who was last seen in Hard Truths.

To crack the case, Steve must journey into the city’s nocturnal underworld of S&M and leather bars, hoping to catch the killer’s eye – but will he lose himself along the way? Controversial with both straight and gay audiences upon its initial release, Friedkin’s film still retains its power to shock and unsettle 45 years later.

Half-brothers Seth and Peter Scriver love to chat, giggle and reminisce. One Indigenous, one white, their shared and divergent heritages offer a fascinating view of the world. Jam-packed with joyful and surprising moments, with animation that recalls a freewheeling 1990s slacker aesthetic, this documentary skilfully navigates the gross inequity of post-colonial societies with the precision of a sniper and the heart of a poet.

Tensions escalate between two opposing soldiers manning a remote desert outpost, in award-winning director Oscar Hudson’s blackly comic and surreal feature debut.

The paradoxical absurdity of warfare is manifest from the opening scene of this sharp, stylish allegory. Duelling military ceremonies on a featureless border inexorably descend into mounting hysteria and see psychological breakdowns of a pair of rival soldiers. Hudson’s formally inventive storytelling is a timely – and timeless – interrogation of why we fight.

Haxan
106mins (15) Horror
Directed by Benjamin Christensen Starring Benjamin Christensen, Ella La Cour, Emmy Schønfeld

This performance will feature a live score performed by Hugo Max

Benjamin Christensen’s Häxan must to be seen to be believed. Playing out as a lecture on witchcraft ‘made flesh’, the film foreshadows the found footage horror genre and features many of the most imaginatively realised and grotesque visuals of silent cinema history. My viola takes on the voice of the occult-obsessed lecturer(/director), possessed by the alluring darkness of the subject, wrestling with the film’s message of hierarchal corruption and its prevailing controversies.

Martyrs
99mins Canada, France (18) Horror
Directed by Pascal Laugier Starring Morjana Alaoui, Mylène Jampanoï, Catherine Bégin

The rare film with a reputation that speaks for itself, Martyrs is perhaps the defining film of the New French Extremity movement and director Pascal Laugier’s masterpiece. Horrifying and thought-provoking in equal measure, it is a deeply philosophical and challenging work of extreme cinema – and undoubtedly one of the finest horror films produced in the twenty-first century.

In 1971, a young Lucie Jurin (Jessie Pham) manages to escape from a slaughterhouse in which she has been subjected to unspeakable torture. Placed in an orphanage, she forms a strong bond with Anna (Erika Scott), who tries to help her to recover from her trauma. Fifteen years later and now in adulthood, Lucie (Mylène Jampanoï) breaks into the isolated home of the Belford family, believing that they were involved in the horrific abuse she suffered in childhood. When she receives a call from Lucie, Anna (Morjana Alaoui) rushes to her aid – but soon comes to regret ever having set foot in the Belford house, where she will experience things beyond human comprehension.

As any semblance of order within the group begins to dissipate, the zombies start to find ways inside. One by one, the living humans become the prey of the deceased ones.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (Live Score)
1920 77mins Germany (U) Horror
Directed by Robert Wiene Starring Conrad Veidt, Friedrich Fehér, Hans Heinz v. Twardowski, Lil Dagover, Rudolf Lettinger, Werner Krauss

This performance will feature a live score performed by Hugo Max

The rich timbre of the viola perfectly captures the aura of Robert Wiene's The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. My improvisations translate the film's angular painted shadows into unnerving melodies inspired by musical techniques that were evolving during the 1920s. The nefarious showmanship of Caligari invites theatrical and macabre sounds, in contrast with ghostly gestures evoking ‘the somnambulist' who is compelled to act against his will.

THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI : One of the most iconic masterpieces in cinema history, Robert Wiene's Das Cabinet des Dr Caligari shook filmgoers worldwide and changed the direction of the art form. Now presented in a definitive restoration, the film's chilling, radically expressionist vision is set to grip viewers again.

At a local carnival in a small German town, hypnotist Dr. Caligari presents the somnambulist Cesare, who can purportedly predict the future of curious fairgoers. But at night, the doctor wakes Cesare from his sleep to enact his evil bidding…

Incalculably influential, the film's nightmarishly jagged sets, sinister atmospheric and psychological emphasis left an immediate impact in its wake (horror, film noir, and gothic cinema would all be shaped directly by it).

We conclude the season on 29th October, we present John Carpenter’s In the Mouth of Madness, which some say influenced (but which I say borrowed heavily from) my own tales of a horror author menaced by his own fiction.

When horror novelist Sutter Cane (Jürgen Prochnow) goes missing, insurance investigator John Trent (Sam Neill) scrutinizes the claim made by his publisher, Jackson Harglow (Charlton Heston), and endeavors to retrieve a yet-to-be-released manuscript and ascertain the writer's whereabouts. Accompanied by the novelist's editor, Linda Styles (Julie Carmen), and disturbed by nightmares from reading Cane's other novels, Trent makes an eerie nighttime trek to a supernatural town in New Hampshire.

Please Note: This performance will feature a PRE-RECORDED VIDEO INTRO from Garth Marenghi.

John Lawrence (Tom Conti), the lone Japanese speaker among the interned British, tries to negotiate an uneasy equilibrium within the camp, which is overseen by the vicious Capt. Yanoi (Ryuichi Sakamoto). An ardent follower of the Bushido moral code, his eye is unexpectedly caught by the arrival Maj. Jack “Strafer” Celliers (David Bowie), an insolent and rabble-rousing new prisoner. Could Yanoi’s fascination with Celliers change everything? Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence has endured as a deeply moving anti-war statement, as well as a thoughtful exploration of national and sexual identity.

1978 103mins USA (18) Neo Noir
Directed by Daryl Duke Starring Christopher Plummer, Elliott Gould, Susannah York

A masterpiece of cunning and suspense… Miles Cullen (Elliott Gould, The Long Goodbye) discovers how interesting life can be when he is transformed from mild-mannered bank teller into daring, ingenious bank robber in a matter of seconds. Held up at the bank by the criminal Reikle (Christopher Plummer, Ordeal by Innocence), Miles manages to stash most of the money in a deposit box first. When Reikle realizes he’s been shortchanged, he plans to take revenge—and a great battle of wits ensues.

To keep the money, Miles reaches new heights of courage, seducing the robber’s girlfriend (Céline Lomez, Plague) and his boss’s mistress (Susannah York, The Killing of Sister George). Filled with equal parts intrigue, romance and unexpected twists, this chilling psychological thriller also features comedy legend John Candy (Delirious) in an early film role. The screenplay by future filmmaker extraordinaire Curtis Hanson (L.A. Confidential) was based on the book Think of a Number by Anders Bodelsen. Wonderfully directed by Daryl Duke (Payday).

Cruise plays Dr William Hartford, who plunges into an erotic foray that threatens his marriage - and may even ensnare him in a lurid murder mystery - after his wife's (Kidman) admission of sexual longings. As the story sweeps from doubt and fear to self-discovery and reconciliation, Kubrick orchestrates it with masterful flourishes. Graceful tracking shots, controlled pacing, rich colours, startling images: bravura traits that make Kubrick a filmmaker for the ages are here to keep everyone's eyes wide shut.

The World of Wong Kar Wai
1994 563mins Hong Kong (18) Movie Marathons
Directed by Wong Kar Wai Starring Tony Leung, Maggie Cheung, Faye Wong, Leslie Cheung, Takeshi Kaneshiro

All Nighter Rules & FAQ re: Etiquette, Food, Alcohol etc

THE ALL NIGHTER IS DUE TO END APPROX 09:00am.

AS TEARS GO BY (1988): A low-level triad "big brother" has a hot-tempered "little brother" who can't keep out of trouble, and consequently is in constant need of being bailed out by his protector. The "big brother" is super cool, but lacks the ambition to rise in the ranks of the triad societies - and once he meets his cousin frm Kowloon and falls in love with her, he even thinks about leaving "the life"

CHUNGKING EXPRESS (1994): The whiplash, double-pronged "Chungking Express" is one of the defining works of nineties cinema and the film that made Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Kar Wai an instant icon. Two heartsick Hong Kong cops (Takeshi Kaneshiro and Tony Leung), both jilted by ex-lovers, cross paths at the Midnight Express take-out restaurant stand, where the ethereal pixie waitress Faye (Faye Wong) works. Anything goes in Wong’s gloriously shot and utterly unexpected charmer, which cemented the sex appeal of its gorgeous stars and forever turned canned pineapple and the Mamas and the Papas’ “California Dreamin’” into tokens of romantic longing.

FALLEN ANGELS (1997): Lost souls reach out for human connection amidst the glimmering night world of Hong Kong in Wong Kar Wai’s hallucinatory, neon-soaked nocturne. Originally conceived as a segment of Chungking Express only to spin off on its own woozy axis, this hyper-cool head rush plays like the dark, moody flip side to Wong’s breakout feature as it charts the subtly interlacing fates of a handful of urban loners, including a coolly detached hitman (Leon Lai) looking to go straight, his business partner (Michelle Reis) who secretly yearns for him, and a mute delinquent (Takeshi Kaneshiro) who wreaks mischief by night. Swinging between hardboiled noir and slapstick lunacy with giddy abandon, Fallen Angels is both a dizzying, dazzling city symphony and a poignant meditation on love, loss, and longing in a metropolis that never sleeps.

DAYS OF BEING WILD (1990): Wong Kar Wai’s breakthrough sophomore feature represents the first full flowering of his swooning signature style. The first film in a loosely connected, ongoing cycle that includes In the Mood for Love and 2046, this ravishing existential reverie is a dreamlike drift through the Hong Kong of the 1960s in which a band of wayward twenty-somethings—including a disaffected playboy (Leslie Cheung) searching for his birth mother, a lovelorn woman (Maggie Cheung) hopelessly enamored with him, and a policeman (Andy Lau) caught in the middle of their turbulent relationship—pull together and push apart in a cycle of frustrated desire. The director’s inaugural collaboration with both cinematographer Christopher Doyle, who lends the film its gorgeously gauzy, hallucinatory texture, and actor Tony Leung, who appears briefly in a tantalizing teaser for a never-realized sequel, Days of Being Wild is an exhilarating first expression of Wong’s trademark themes of time, longing, dislocation, and the restless search for human connection.

IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE (2000): Hong Kong, 1962: Chow Mo-wan (Tony Leung Chiu-wai) and Su Li-zhen (Maggie Cheung Man-yuk) move into neighboring apartments on the same day. Their encounters are formal and polite—until a discovery about their spouses creates an intimate bond between them. At once delicately mannered and visually extravagant, Wong Kar Wai’s In the Mood for Love is a masterful evocation of romantic longing and fleeting moments. With its aching musical soundtrack and exquisitely abstract cinematography by Christopher Doyle and Mark Lee Ping-bin, this film has been a major stylistic influence on the past decade of cinema, and is a milestone in Wong’s redoubtable career.
