NEW RELEASE + RE-RELEASE SCREENINGS

The full list of New Release, and the odd re-release, films currently in the building and when they're screening!

LAST-MINUTE ADDITIONS

We usually have our repertory programme set months in advanced. But sometimes we gone a frenzy of adding some really great films to the programme at the last-minute and things might get lost in the shuffle. Here are some great films we've added recently that we think you should know about...

£1 Member Screenings

Every now and then we pick a film in our programme and offer it up to our lovely members for only £1.  Don't worry if you've purchased a ticket before the price-drop, just bring it to the Box Office on the night to claim your partial refund.

PLEASE NOTE: From time to time, we may pick a film that has multiple screenings in our programme as the £1 for Members film. Due to the build of our website, when we add said films to this page, all of the scheduled performances will show up, including those that aren't £1 for Members. Only screenings marked with "£1 Mem. Film" next to the time are Members Screenings. Any others will be priced at full price.

If you see a solo screening that isn't marked with "£1 Mem. Film", but on this page, it is likely because we haven't yet removed the film from this page from a previous Members Screening - and these, too, are not £1 for Member screenings. We try to update the page one or two times a week. We apologise for any inconveniece.

4K PRESENTATIONS

The Prince Charles Cinema is now presenting films from 4K, exlusively in our Downstairs Screen.

Here is where you can find all the exciting 4K films coming up in the programme.

Please Note: Some films will screen over multiple dates and in our Upstairs Screen, and won't be presented in 4K. Performances in 4K will be marked next to the performance time.

ODYSSEY 2023: STEPHEN CHOW IN FOCUS

A true multi-hyphenate, Stephen Chow is a writer-director-star-producer responsible for some of the wildest, most enjoyable comedies in cinema history, flying the flag for his brand of Hong Kong mo lei tau (“nonsense comedy”). Odyssey 2023 and Prince Charles Cinema are happy to showcase four films from across his decade-spanning career, in a retrospective program that’s the first of its kind in the UK.

This programme, as part of the Odyssey 2023 film festival, provides a wider context of both Chow’s career and Hong Kong film culture in recent decades. It wishes to inspire a new scope for discussion, in reflection of a revolutionary time.

In its 3rd edition, Odyssey: a Chinese cinema is an annual film festival presented by NGO UK-China Film Collab (UCFC). This year's theme focuses on the debate about ‘Global Sustainability’.

About the Curators:

Daniel has written on film and film festivals since 2007 and contributed to Den of Geek, FACT, The Guardian and other media. He is also a copywriter in finance and fashion.

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Riley is the Lead Curator of Odyssey 2023. She is also the Specialised Programme Curator and Producer at UCFC. She graduated from the MA Film and Screen Media at the Birkbeck University of London.

THUG ROSE : MIXED MARTIAL ARTIST

"I choose love," UFC champion Rose Namajunas tells herself every morning. In the ring, she gracefully moves to the rhythm of the music, and after her victories, she wraps herself in the tricolour. Born into a family of artists from Lithuania, Rose represents and reveals the fundamental difference between violence and combat. And that immense self-confidence, as well as an enormous support circle, can help you endure even the most arduous journey. This film is a sensitive and honest documentary about a true artist who found an antidote to her childhood's hardships.

Marius A. Markevicius (born in 1976 in California, USA) is the author of one of Lithuania's most-watched documentaries ever. The Other Dream Team tells the story of the success of Lithuanian basketball players in the 1992 Olympics, the quest for freedom, and the fall of the Soviet Union. The Lithuanian-American also directed the most successful film ever shown in Lithuanian cinemas, a screen adaptation of the novel about exile, Ashes in the Snow. With the story of Rose Namajunas, he continues his mission to tell the story of the small but courageous Lithuanian nation to the whole world. Symbolically, Rose cites The Other Dream Team as a great inspiration in Marius A. Markevičius' latest film.

Trans-X-Ploitation - a series of screenings re-examining trans-themed exploitation cinema of yesteryear

Outwardly, Glen (Ed Wood) is the picture of clean-cut all-American masculinity. He’s about to marry his beautiful, loving fiancée Barbara (Dolores Fuller), but there’s another woman in Glen’s life – his “other self”, Glenda. Having cross-dressed in private for years, Glen/Glenda is terrified that their secret will scupper any chances for a happy future with Dolores. But could love conquer all?

Independent programmers TGirlsOnFilm (Jaye Hudson) and Funeral Parade (Sarah Cleary) are proud to present Trans-X-Ploitation, a series of screenings re-examining trans-themed exploitation cinema of yesteryear. We’re kicking off the season with Ed Wood’s ground-breaking psychodrama Glen or Glenda. Though often misremembered as “camp” or “so bad it’s good”, Wood’s semi-autobiographical film is actually a deeply affecting account of a gender non-conforming life, as well as singular blend of melodrama, horror and experimental cinema.
